A BATON AND A METRONOME
Thought Adjuster: “The thought came to your mind that your heart acts as a metronome. As you initiated your meditation this morning, your sensed that your breathing was faster than your heartbeat and that you needed to slow it down in order to synchronize their cadence. There are other times when your breathing can act as the maestro's baton, setting a slower tempo for the rhythm of your heartbeat.
“Indeed, as you strive to delve deeper within, some practical tools or prompts may be very helpful. At times, your heartbeat has to be slowed down, at other times your breathing. Both are the gateways to a deeper meditative state—the door openers to your inner temple. Once they gain you access to that place of utmost stillness, they become irrelevant as your experience becomes both timeless and space-less.
“At times, it is good to practice inner stillness without any other agenda. It does you good to sit in that place, without any thought. When your mind becomes as still as a placid lake, you can detect a finer layer of sounds that, even though they are very subtle, take you to new levels of spiritual discovery. No longer will you feel like the famous elephant in a porcelain shop. Rather, you will feel like a much appreciative connoisseur of the Art of Stillness and you will not want to disturb such a profound state of being-ness. You will tiptoe so as not to break the inner spell. You will relish in it as long as you possibly can and it will do wonder to your whole being and recharge its complex batteries.”
